This very exciting tour to Japan included textile experiences such as shibori, sashiko, indigo dyeing, boro, fabric stencilling and textile shopping together with visits to flea markets, artisans’ studios, kimono workshops, rural villages, temples, an onsen and a tea ceremony. During our second textile tour of northern Vietnam we watched skilled spinners, weavers and dyers work with hemp fibre to produce the most wonderful fabric, steady-handed batik artists transform plain fabric to beautifully decorated lengths, basketry crafts-people and fishing-net makers at work, the process of silk production from cocoon to exquisite feather-light metreage and skillful embroiderers working with the tiniest of intricate stitches to decorate their traditional clothing. Hands-on activities included Hmong batik, indigo dyeing, and embroidery, hemp spinning, weaving and polishing, LoLo reverse applique and basketry. All of this along with visits to rural villages, colourful markets, the workshop of a fourth generation water-puppeteer, the best museums displaying the textiles and clothing of Vietnam’s diverse ethnic minority groups, a river cruise and some of the most spectactular scenery we’ve every seen. We do hope that you’ve had the chance to follow our fabulous textiles retreat in Ubud where we tried our hand at batik, watched skilled craftsmen and women weaving, tying and dyeing single ikat cloth, double ikat, endek and songket, purchased some very beautiful textiles, ate lots of divine food and viewed some spectacular and lush tropical locations. If you haven’t already done so, check out the Facebook and Instagram hashtags #retreatrecreate and #balitextilesretreat2016 and view our blog posts
