We’re delighted to announce a BRAND NEW addition to our creative programs in Tasmania, Australia. Our Hobart-based art and craft creative program includes FOUR FABULOUS, DAY-LONG WORKSHOPS OVER FOUR DAYS, each led by an accomplished and well-respected artist. Our accommodation for all five nights is at a beautiful heritage hotel in a prime location in Hobart.
You’re warmly invited to join our like-minded, small group for this immersive, creative program. Expand your skills, confidence and creative repertoire as our excellent workshop leaders guide you through a range of techniques and processes using a variety of mediums.
This Hobart-based creative program is timed to give participants the option to also join our 7-10 April 2027 Tasmania (Launceston to Hobart) handcrafts tour with a weekend in between.
1. Mixed media collage and single-sheet book-making
Our workshop leader is a perpetual maker and a dynamo when it comes to creativity. Her work incorporates mixed media collage, fibre arts, bookmaking, basketmaking, botanical printing, natural dyeing, indigo dyeing and more.
Create a mixed media collage, incorporating paper ephemera and a range of acrylic paint and ink for simple printing, stamping and stencils, plus pencils, crayons, pastels and pigment sticks for mark making. All materials will be supplied, but you’re welcome to bring additional paper items (such as maps, book pages, sheet music, notebooks, paper doilies and paper serviettes etc) to incorporate into your project if you wish. Additionally, you’ll learn techniques to create a book from a single sheet of paper, transforming your collage into a beautiful structured artwork.
2. Mono-printing with pressed plant specimens
Our workshop leader is a botanical artist, print maker, fabric and wallpaper designer, natural historian and ecological activist. In 2017 she was awarded a Churchill Fellowship, Australia’s most prestigious international research scholarship. Her highly detailed and intimate artwork offers a window into Tasmania’s wild and often endangered plant communities.
As we explore the world of print-making, you will be guided in various mono-print concepts and techniques, using multiple tools, found items and a range of pressed botanical specimens. Through both demonstration and practice, you will learn how to create visual complexity and exquisite tonal modulation in your prints. You will leave the workshop with a range of exciting new artworks and skills.
3. Botanical watercolour art
Our workshop leader has practiced, exhibited and taught art over many years. Her artworks include still life, landscape and abstract paintings, all inspired by her experience of Tasmania’s lyrical beauty of remote and vulnerable landscapes.
After being warmly welcomed to the studio, our experienced workshop teacher will discuss the technicalities of watercolour painting such as how different types of paper effect watercolour and how watercolour paint works. A variety of Tasmanian flora samples will be on hand for inspiration and you will be shown how to choose an optimal specimen for your project. Easily learnt skills will be demonstrated and you’ll be guided to produce a simple but beautiful, botanical watercolour.
4. Create your own bento bag or furoshiki wrapping cloth
Our workshop leader is a passionate maker, creator and tutor who is keen to share her skills and an abundance of ideas for ways to reuse, restore, recycle, remake and reduce textile waste. Her specialties are creative embroidery, eco-dyeing and transforming discarded clothing into unique wearables.
You’ll create and embellish your choice of either 1) a furoshiki wrapping cloth: a traditional square Japanese cloth used for wrapping, carrying, and storing goods – an eco-friendly, reusable alternative to single-use gift wrap, plastic bags, or paper OR 2) a bento bag – a simple, structured, reusable fabric bag, originally made for carrying a bento box but perfect for use as a carry bag, gift bag or for storing and carrying your current portable knitting/stitching project. Both items are the perfect base for some creative stitching. A variety of stitches and techniques for piecing and embellishing fabric will be demonstrated and we’ll also learn to make string/cord from fabric strips. In line with the artist’s environmental and sustainability values, we’ll work with repurposed natural fibres and materials which have been collected, donated or found. Samples of the artist’s work will be on display to provide inspiration.
